Notes

Note 1: The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is recognized as the first common carrier railroad and the first to offer scheduled freight and passenger service to the public in the United States. The Old Main Line was its first route laid west from Relay, Maryland (to the southeast of Baltimore proper) along the banks of the Patapsco River. Today it sees limited use because of its grades and curves, typically with empty trains returning east to Baltimore, while most traffic traverses the Capitol and Metropolitan subdivisions.
